Keith Country Day School’s history began in 1916, when Belle Emerson Keith opened a small school in her home at 420 North Main Street in Rockford. Mrs. Keith believed children learn at different rates and in different ways. She believed they need to learn by doing, in a nurturing environment where art, music, and drama could instill a lifelong love of learning. That belief became the foundation for everything Keith is today.
Four years later, having outgrown its original site, the school moved to a new campus on North Second Street. Generations of Keith students have since built a community defined by sincerity of purpose and respect for honest achievement. During the Great Depression, anonymous benefactors helped many students attend Keith without paying tuition, and many teachers taught without pay. That same commitment to access still shapes Keith today.
More than a century after Belle Emerson Keith opened her doors, Keith Country Day School remains the Rockford region’s only independent, college-preparatory school, Pre-K through Grade 12. Keith is still a place where children feel safe to test their limits and explore new possibilities.
A Country Day School is an independent day school that brings together strong academics, athletics, and the arts within a close-knit community, without requiring students to board. The model emerged in the early 20th century as an alternative to boarding schools, giving families access to that same tradition of excellence while students stayed close to home. At Keith, this means small class sizes paired with a well-rounded education that develops the whole child.
