Upper School P.E. and Athletics
Keith’s high school physical education and athletic programs focus on teamwork, sportsmanship and skill development for lifetime activities by:
- Providing healthy alternatives and solutions to the current trends of inactivity in our society.
- Fostering teamwork, respect, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
- Promoting self-growth including self-discipline, self-acceptance, and self-esteem.
- Building healthy minds and bodies.
- Meeting the individual needs of the students by offering a variety of activities.
Team Sports
When it comes to Keith’s athletic program, participation and enthusiasm are balanced with a high level of competition. We want our students to enjoy the opportunity to compete and participate in sports, which is why we have a no-cut policy. Anyone who wants to play team sports can. On average 80 percent of our middle and upper school students participate in at least one sport.
A member of the Illinois High School Athletic Association (IHSA) and a founding member of the Northeastern Athletic Conference, Keith offers volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, and cross country. Swimming and track and field are also offered with student interest. In addition to our team and individual sports programs, we also have a comprehensive physical education curriculum that emphasizes motor development, coordination, and basic fitness in the context of fair play and sportsmanship.
The main goal for our athletic program is for our athletes to realize their full potential while reinforcing the principles of self-esteem building, discipline, fair play, and tradition. Athletic participation is an integral part of education and we believe that participation in sports develops and instills the qualities of sportsmanship, character, and leadership.
Although Keith is well-known for its academics, our high school athletic programs have grown substantially. Since 1982, our teams have won more than 32 regional, sectional and conference championships. In 2017, our female athlete won the state championship in the long jump. Our girls’ volleyball team won three consecutive Class 1A State Championships (2012, 2013, and 2014), and our boys’ soccer team placed fourth at the Class 1A State Finals (2012) and third place in state (2015). Our Scholastic Bowl team, which falls under the umbrella of the IHSA, has claimed three third-place state finishes and won the Regional Championship in the past six years.
